Amanita (A.) sturgeonii sp. nov., a commonly used provisional name, is validated and described from hardwood forests in the eastern United States. Analyses of the ITS and LSU gene regions place A. sturgeonii in section Phalloideae, distinct from any previously described species. The formal delineation of A. sturgeonii contributes significantly to our understanding of the diversity and macroscopic differentiation of species within A. section Phalloideae, a section of high toxicological significance
